When most people think about tactical fitness events, they picture athletes competing, carrying heavy gear, shooting stages, and pushing themselves through difficult challenges. What many people don’t realize is that none of those events happen without volunteers.
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to volunteer at The Patriot Games. Like many first-time volunteers, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I signed up simply because I wanted learn more about how the events work, see what I am getting myself into for my first event, and be a part of the community. Also, because my wife Tracy was volunteering!
What I quickly learned is that volunteers are much more than extra hands. They are a critical part of the event experience. From athlete check-in and logistics to judging and course support, volunteers help keep everything running smoothly and safely.
In my case, several scheduled volunteers were unable to attend, and I was unexpectedly assigned to a Judge position. To be honest, I was nervous. I wanted to do a good job and make sure the athletes received fair and consistent scoring. Fortunately, Austin, the Battle Boss provided guidance, and before long I found myself fully engaged in the competition.

What surprised me most was how much I enjoyed being part of the action. As a judge, I had a front-row seat to watch athletes tackle challenges, overcome obstacles, and push through difficult moments. I got to meet competitors of all different skill-levels, learn more about the sport, and see firsthand what makes this community special.
Volunteering also gave me a different perspective on the event. Instead of simply watching from the sidelines, I became part of the team helping create the experience for everyone involved.
If you’ve been curious about tactical fitness events but aren’t quite ready to compete, volunteering is one of the best ways to get involved. You’ll learn how events operate, meet athletes and organizers, gain valuable experience, and contribute to something bigger than yourself.
Most importantly, you’ll discover that these events rely on people willing to step up and help. Whether you have years of experience or have never attended an event before, there is usually a role where you can make a difference.
The next time you see a volunteer registration open, consider signing up. You may arrive wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into, but there’s a good chance you’ll leave with new friends, new experiences, and a deeper appreciation for the community.
The athletes may be competing on the course, but volunteers are an important part of what makes every event possible.

Very well said. Glad you enjoyed your first volunteering experience. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and none of it would be possible without them.
It was very exciting! I can’t wait to compete myself either. I will most likely be volunteering for the Palm Bay event. Tracy is participating and I want to be able to support her and the community.
