First Tactical Fitness Event: Community Spotlight With Colton Henderson

April 11, 2026 by Damion Leave a Comment

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I have worked in IT for over a decade, but grew up in the mountains of Virginia learning how to handle firearms responsibly. Originally I wanted to join the armed forces, but was in a car accident that left me with permanent nerve damage in my arm. However, the spirit to work with tactical athletes and compete never left my life. Since attending my first tactical event, I have become a certified NRA instructor and work closely with local tactical events in my area.

How did you first hear about tactical fitness type events?

I found The Tactical Games on YouTube and knew that I wanted to compete in them one day, to prove I could overcome my injuries.

Thinking about signing for The Tactical Games Regional event or The Tactical Games Skirmish?

What was your first Tactical Fitness event?

My first event was a Regional Tactical Games event in 2024

Did you have any doubts or concerns going into your first event? What were they?

I was worried that I would not be able to compete at the level I needed to, due to nerve damage I suffered in my left arm.

How did you prepare leading up to the competition? (training, gear, mindset, etc.)

I joined the Tactical Games Facebook Group and started their Preparation Training. While also reaching out to people in that group that were close to me, to start training together. I also read multiple books on self development to grow my mindset and prepare myself for discomfort. During that time my book of choice was “12 Rules for Life” by Jordan Peterson and also “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David J. Schwartz.

What was your first impression when you arrived at the event and saw everything in person?

I was stunned by how many people were at the event, I didn’t expect so many people to know about such an event. I thought that it was a very niche event, but have come to find there are so many people out there who are passionate about this sport.

How did it feel completing your first event?

I felt accomplished, even though I didn’t place very high I was able to get through the whole event. Which was not the case for many, who dropped out after the first day.

What part of the event challenged you the most, and why? (physical and/or mental)

It was definitely physical fitness that challenged me most. I had never done an event that caused you to perform such intense cardio in a short period of time, while shooting. It was very eye opening on what I needed to improve on, and has led me to my current development plan.

What advice would you give to someone who is on the fence about signing up for their first event?

My advice would be to volunteer at any tactical event near you. That way you can see first hand what the stages look like, and learn from other competitors on what you need to work on.
